If you want to keep it cheap, try Hokkai Hotel (¥500) or Hotel Grand Toya; for a morning bath, Toya Onsen Hotel Hanabi (from 6 a.m.) or Manseikaku’s morning session; for an open-air bath with a lake view, Kohantei. Couples and families who prefer privacy may like the private onsen at Toya Kanko Hotel (reservation required).
Onsen in the northern Lake Toya area (from Toya Farmer’s House & Cloud9 Toya)
If you are staying in the northern area, a little away from the onsen town, there are public hot springs beloved by locals—simple, high-quality water at prices that are not aimed at tourists.
- Toya Ikoi-no-Ie — a public bath, so you can enjoy inexpensive, high-quality water. Soap, shampoo and towels are basically to be brought yourself (they are also sold on site).
- Naka-Toya Onsen Kimundo-no-Ie — in the northeast of Lake Toya, close to the water. A little hot for children, but the water is of excellent quality.
- Toya Takarada Onsen — day bathing 6:00–10:00 and 14:00–24:00 (as of July 2026). Being open late at night is very convenient.
Onsen in the Abuta & Toyoura area (from Toya Tiny Cabin)
If you are staying southwest of the lake, near the sea, the following are convenient.
- Date Onsen — along National Route 37, close to the highway and easy to reach.
- Toyoura Onsen Shiosai — the only hot spring in the town of Toyoura. Close to a campsite and the sea, so you can combine it with a seaside walk.
Tips for enjoying day-use onsen
- Bring your own towel. Most places rent or sell towels (around ¥200–400), but bringing one from your lodging saves money.
- Hours can change for cleaning and turnover. Day-use reception in particular can be limited, as staying guests come first. Checking in advance is wise.
- Morning bath or evening bath? Hanabi and Manseikaku for early mornings, Takarada Onsen for late nights—choosing by time of day is part of the fun of onsen-hopping at Lake Toya.
- On a multi-night stay, go for a different one each day. One night allows one or two at most; stay several and you can go “hot-spring hopping.”
