Spring at Lake Toya (March–May)

As the long winter lifts, the most pleasant season of all arrives at Lake Toya. The cherry blossoms are usually at their best around Golden Week (late April to early May), so you can enjoy “one more round of blossom viewing” after the flowers have finished on the mainland—one of the joys of springtime in Hokkaido. This is the only time of year you can take in the lake, the cherry blossoms and the still-snowcapped Mount Yotei all at once. The Lake Toya Long-run Fireworks Festival also usually opens in late April.

Summer at Lake Toya (June–August)

Summer at Lake Toya is a cool highland resort that lets you forget the fierce heat of the mainland. There is plenty to fill a whole day: waterside activities such as canoeing and SUP (usually available seasonally—please check whether reservations are required), cool strolls along the lakeside, and the nightly Long-run Fireworks in the evening.

Autumn at Lake Toya (September–November)

Autumn is when the lakeside and the mountains turn colour all at once—the most pleasant season of all for a drive. The autumn leaves around the lake are usually at their best from mid to late October, while higher mountain passes such as Orofure Pass colour earlier. Because the timing is staggered, you can enjoy the autumn foliage again and again across this area.

Winter at Lake Toya (December–February)

Winter is wrapped in silence, and the snow-covered lakeside takes on a magical quality. Even after the Lake Toya Long-run Fireworks Festival has ended, you can still enjoy the clear air unique to winter and an onsen with a view of the snow. Some of Hokkaido’s leading ski resorts, such as Rusutsu and Niseko, are 30 minutes to an hour away by car, making Lake Toya a popular base for playing in the snow and skiing too.

Each season has its own appeal. Spring, when the cherry blossoms and the opening of the fireworks overlap (usually around Golden Week); summer, with waterside play and nightly fireworks; the pleasant driving of autumn’s foliage; and winter, for snow views and skiing—choose to suit what you are after. Planning your dates around an event is a great idea too.

The Lake Toya Long-run Fireworks Festival is usually held from late April to the end of October, every night for about 20 minutes from around 8:45 p.m. A key feature is that you can enjoy them over a long stretch from spring through summer to autumn.
